Somalia army seizes key base from Al Shabaab

Somali especial forces known as ‘Danab’ have launched an operation against major rebel stronghold in south of Mogadishu.

The especial forces managed to seize Sabib area, some 40km away from Somali capital Mogadishu, after heavy gun ghting, a witness said.

He says the country’s forces took control of Sabib after an attack on militants’ bases, causing untold facilities.

Somali military says heavy casualty incited upon Al Shabaab during the attack.

It is unclear how many were killed in the latest fighting.

The attack comes after Somali intelligence claimed to have captured a senior Al Shabaab commander in operation carried out on Sunday in Awdhegle town, some 60km south of Somali capital Mogadishu.

There was no immediate comment from Al Shabaab over the claims.

Al Shabaab has major bases in Sabib where the especial forces re-captured on Monday.

Al-Shabab, which is al-Qaida’s East Africa aliate, has been waging insurgency for more than years in Somalia.

The group was ousted out of Mogadishu in 2011. The group also wants to impose a strict version of Islam in the Horn of Africa nation.

The al Qaeda linked group lost territory in recent years to Somali army forces and African Union forces, after joint military operations.
