Somali forces seize areas in Central Somalia from Al-Shabaab militants      

Somali forces have captured a key Al-Shabaab-held area in Bardhere District in Gedo region, south of the country, the military said in a statement.

Somali National Army Commander in Charge of the 49th Infantry Division in Gedo Ali Mohamed told the media that his forces launched an operation on Sunday (2 June) and captured Ali Hared locality and adjacent areas.

According to Mohamed, the militant group Al-Shabaab had a check point in Ali Hared area which was a major source of income for them.

“Our operation was planned ahead and we executed it yesterday by capturing Ali Hared and nearby areas. The terrorists are on the run,” said Commander Mohamed.

Somali forces in collaboration with Africa Union troops have liberated several areas in Gedo region in recent operations.
