US military airstrike kills militant in Somalia

The United States military said it killed a militant in an airstrike near Tortoroow in Somalia.

The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said no civilians were killed or injured in the latest airstrike but it would release more details as appropriate as a post-strike analysis continues.

The airstrike, which took place on Wednesday, is the first in the area in about a month.

On May 5, three al-Shabaab terrorists were killed by an airstrike in defense of Somali security forces. The security forces were engaged by Al-Shabaab militants during an operation to disrupt the terrorist network in the area and to bolster local support for the Federal Government of Somalia.

US military airstrikes in the last month against ISIS-Somalia and Al-Shabaab have majorly been in the Golis Mountains. AFRICOM said that the Golis Mountains are a known area for Al-Shabaab camps and ongoing fighting between Al-Shabaab and ISIS-Somalia.

The airstrikes in the area have so far killed a total of 34 militants.

AFRICOM says the airstrikes support Somali security forces efforts to protect the Somali people from terrorism and support long-term security in the region.

Somalia has been plagued by terrorism for more than a decade, perpetrated by the Al-Shabaab militant group. The war waged by the terrorists has killed tens of thousands and forced millions to flee their homes.
