At a press gaggle at the White House Thursday, President Donald Trump told reporters that he “wasn’t happy” with the chants of “send her back” that were directed at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) at a rally of his in North Carolina on Wednesday.
Trump also claimed he tried to begin speaking quickly in order to stop the chant. Video shows Trump paused for nearly five seconds to allow the crowd to continue chanting at Wednesday night’s rally.
The chants came after Trump spent days attacking Omar and three other progressive Democrat women in the House of Representatives. On Sunday, Trump tweeted that the four women should “go back” to the countries they came from, despite three of four women being born in America. The fourth, Omar, came from Somalia as a child and is an American citizen.
