More than 60 civilians were killed in renewed attack in #Dibate wereda, Metekel zone in #BenishangulGumuz regional state, VOA Amharic reported. Citing eyewitnesses and survivors who escaped the attack, the news media said the attacks happened last night, and added more details will follow in its evening bulletin.

On the other hand, DW Amharic reported that armed groups killed 11 civilians last night in #Guba Wereda of Benishangul Gumuz region. The portal reported that additional 16 people including civilians and members of the national defense forces were killed in #Wenbera wereda, Begondi kebelle in attacks which started since Thursday January 06.

Neither the regional state, nor the Metekel zone’s communication offices have issued a statement as of yet.

It is to be remembered that on December 28 last year, a taskforce comprised of the national defense forces and senior local and federal authorities was established by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and has taken control of security in Metekel zone of the regional state. Led by Major General Asrat Denero (Pictured), Head of Information Department of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), the taskforce announced on January 10 that a comprehensive security work covering the entire Metekel zone was underway in collaboration with local communities and security establishment of the region.

The establishment of the special taskforce which is directly accountable to the office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed followed the killing of at least 207 civilians in an overnight attack by armed groups in Bekuji kebelle, Bulen Wereda of Metekel zone on December 23.
