Senior al-Shabaab commander was among over 16 militants killed over the weekend in separate operation in southern and central Somalia, military officials confirmed.
Mohamed Abdi Suubiye, better known Toosoow, a senior al-Shabaab ring leader was said have been killed last Saturday after he attempted to resist the Somali military in Darussalam village near Aadan Yabaal town of Middle Shabelle region.
Toosoow was allegedly behind a series of attacks on civilians and security forces including military bases in south of the country.
Several of his bodyguards were also eliminated in the gunfight, according the military.
Elsewhere in central Somalia, 15 al-shabaab militants were neutralized after they attempt to SNA convoy.
According to SNA spokesman, Ali Hashi Abdi, the fighting took place on Sunday in an area between Dhusamareb town and El-Dhere village in Galmudug state.
Abdi said that the army also injured several insurgents and recovered weapons during the fighting.
Somali military has intensified operations to annihilate the militants in central and southern Somalia ahead of the parliamentary and presidential elections slated for this yea.
The militants control several towns and villages in four of Somalia’s regional states including Southwest, Jubbaland, HirShabelle and Galmudug states.
Al-Shabaab also carries deadly bomb attacks in major towns with latest being executed last Friday at a restaurant in Somali capital, killing more than 18 people including government soldiers.
The attack also wounded over dozen others.
